Dear Dr Scurr
With reference to yesterday’s ‘Ask the doctor’, I was especially interested in the question and answer about throat clearing.
I see a significant number of people who suffer in this way. On testing them I usually find that they are intolerant to a staple food or drink in their diet, and are also reacting to chemical fragrances. I find that avoiding their problem foods plus cutting out chemical fragrances in their homes has the effect of improving their symptoms by an average of 83%. Of those who do notice a benefit, the average improvement is 97%. 17% of my clients see no improvement with this approach.
The fragrances that I ask people to remove from their homes include fragranced candles, plug in and stand alone air fresheners, incense sticks, body sprays like ‘Impulse’, shake’n vac, and any cleaning spray, polish or floor cleaner that has an added perfume like lemon, vanilla, lavender, pine. There has been a proliferation in the use of these products over the last 10 years or so, and I find that removing such products from the homes of catarrh and asthma sufferers also achieves good results.
Yours sincerely
